Why not grow your own plants successfully in Ireland with a great value garden polytunnel from JM Polytunnels, Ireland?

About our polytunnels:

We use custom-made steel brackets for the corner and hoop supports, pressure-treated timber and commercial-grade UV proof plastic, ensuring a strong and durable tunnel which will enhance your gardening for years to come.

Our latest innovation is a hooped fruit cage as shown above. These can have a plastic roof panel to protect you from the rain but allowing rain onto your fruit bushes which are protected from the wind and birds. Fruit cages can join onto your tunnel or be used as a stand-alone unit - please enquire. We also make coldframes using double-skin polytunnel plastic which are much easier to lift (and safer) than glass. See below for details.

We can supply elbow-height raised beds to save you bending. These make maximum use of the tunnel height and allow storage underneath:

A vast amount of fruit & vegetables you buy in supermarkets was grown in polytunnels. Why not get your own? Our models are sturdy and compact and, we feel, much better looking than the industrial metal pole versions which can look out of place in a domestic garden. Guaranteed results for your kitchen crops are easily achieved with minimal knowledge plus you'll have a lovely place to do your gardening, out of the wind and rain. Hanging Baskets and plant supports can be hung from the rails, giving much more flexibility to tunnel use throughout the growing season.

High quality polytunnel components, including our steel corner brackets

We use only high quality polytunnel components, including our own custom-made steel corner brackets.

NEW PRODUCTS

JM Polytunnel - Coldframes

New JM Polytunnels Coldframe design, made from double skin polytunnel plastic and pressure treated timber with sturdy 2" x 2" frame. Dimensions: Approx 4ft wide, 2ft 5" front to back, 2ft high at back, 19" high at front. Weed barrier at base to keep out slugs & weeds. Price €135 incl VAT when bought with one of our polytunnels. Please enquire for price without tunnel.

Using your coldframe: Coldframes are the halfway house for your polytunnel seedlings, allowing them to acclimatise before sowing in the ground. Close the lid at night in colder weather. Monty Don (BBC Gardener's World) recommends coldframes to store your trays of seedlings in. As your polytunnel begins to fill up with early sowings a coldframe is the ideal staging post before the frosts are over. A useful web article on using coldframes is here

Growing plants in your JM Polytunnel

...

Some Frequently Asked Polytunnel Questions:

Q. How long does the plastic last?. - According to Joyce Russell, these days 15 years is not uncommon. The technology involved in growing-tunnel plastic has evolved considerably since the early days, prompted by commercial growers in Europe who use tunnels to start their plants off and to raise tomatoes, peppers, strawberries etc. Nowadays completely UV proof and extremely durable, polytunnel plastic will withstand all the Irish weather can throw at it whilst retaining it's light-admitting qualities throughout it's life. When it comes to replacing the plastic, a new sheet sufficient to cover a 16ft by 10ft tunnel will cost around €80.00 in Ireland so it's not a huge cost when spread over such a long time period.

...

Q. How do I learn how to use my polytunnel? - Most gardening books mention greenhouse growing but a polytunnel stays warmer inside for longer. Even experienced gardeners are amazed at how early they can sow and how long the growing season is inside a polytunnel. The only thing to watch is your watering regime. It might be pouring rain outsde but inside the tunnel your crops are reliant on you for their water & feeding. If the weather is very hot, leave the doors open until the evening. Some shading might be required for tender seedlings in full sun and a piece of horticultural fleece will do the job admirably.

Q. Do you sell polytunnel plastic?

Not separately but we can recommend a supplier in Clonmel. Call John Manning on 0860844459

Recommended by our staff!

Although the Irish climate is a great one for growing a wide variety of crops we are limited to cool climate produce. If you want to grow a broader range of crops and extend your season then a polytunnel is a cost effective solution. This book is a very practical guide to polytunnel gardening and will help you get the best value out of a small space. For both beginners and experienced gardeners alike it provides the knowledge you need to succeed!

Some more uses for your polytunnel:

Walk-in models: The central roof rail allows support for tying-in climbing plants such as vine tomatoes, or for starting off early hanging baskets.

You can also overwinter delicate "southern-hemisphere" plants in a polytunnel, safe from the worst of the weather.

Multiply your perennials by taking cuttings and growing them on in your tunnel for much better results.

Shelving in your polytunnel

Use the staging (shelving) for seedlings and move them out to your coldframe or beds when your plants grow big enough. For taller plants such as tomatoes, simply pinch out the tops when they reach roof height. They'll need string or cane supports as they produce big crops inside. Get a production line going, sowing every 2 weeks so you'll have a series of crops into the Autumn. Strawberries do particularly well in a polytunnel and you can bury the runners in new pots until they take, ensuring a new set of plants every couple of years.

wheelchair users, raised beds, vegetable growing, Ireland

All components are removable and can be made at a suitable working height to save bending or for mobility-impaired gardeners. Wheelchair-friendly polytunnels: We can also supply raised polytunnels, which are suitable for mobility-impaired gardeners. Please ring for more details.

VEGETABLE GROWING TIP:

Very early season growing. Our staff use heated propagators to start seedlings, then they transfer them to the polytunnel for a head-start on the growing season. This is ideal for expensive seeds such as beef tomatoes where you don't want to risk poor germination.
