Growing plants in your JM Polytunnel ... Some Frequently Asked Polytunnel Questions: Q. How long does the plastic last?. - According to Joyce Russell, these days 15 years is not uncommon. The technology involved in growing-tunnel plastic has evolved considerably since the early days, prompted by commercial growers in Europe who use tunnels to start their plants off and to raise tomatoes, peppers, strawberries etc. Nowadays completely UV proof and extremely durable, polytunnel plastic will withstand all the Irish weather can throw at it whilst retaining it's light-admitting qualities throughout it's life. When it comes to replacing the plastic, a new sheet sufficient to cover a 16ft by 10ft tunnel will cost around €80.00 in Ireland so it's not a huge cost when spread over such a long time period. ... Q. How do I learn how to use my polytunnel? - Most gardening books mention greenhouse growing but a polytunnel stays warmer inside for longer. Even experienced gardeners are amazed at how early they can sow and how long the growing season is inside a polytunnel. The only thing to watch is your watering regime. It might be pouring rain outsde but inside the tunnel your crops are reliant on you for their water & feeding. If the weather is very hot, leave the doors open until the evening. Some shading might be required for tender seedlings in full sun and a piece of horticultural fleece will do the job admirably. Q. Do you sell polytunnel plastic? Not separately but we can recommend a supplier in Clonmel. Call John Manning on 0860844459

Shelving in your polytunnel Use the staging (shelving) for seedlings and move them out to your coldframe or beds when your plants grow big enough. For taller plants such as tomatoes, simply pinch out the tops when they reach roof height. They'll need string or cane supports as they produce big crops inside. Get a production line going, sowing every 2 weeks so you'll have a series of crops into the Autumn. Strawberries do particularly well in a polytunnel and you can bury the runners in new pots until they take, ensuring a new set of plants every couple of years.
All components are removable and can be made at a suitable working height to save bending or for mobility-impaired gardeners. Wheelchair-friendly polytunnels: We can also supply raised polytunnels, which are suitable for mobility-impaired gardeners. Please ring for more details. VEGETABLE GROWING TIP: Very early season growing. Our staff use heated propagators to start seedlings, then they transfer them to the polytunnel for a head-start on the growing season. This is ideal for expensive seeds such as beef tomatoes where you don't want to risk poor germination.
