Growing your own vegetables in Ireland with a JM Polytunnel

Our most popular polytunnel is 20ft by 10ft. We can make smaller tunnels to order, (based on a spacing of 4ft between hoops). We use custom-made steel brackets for the corners and hoop supports, ensuring a strong and durable tunnel. All timber is weather proofed. Our latest innovation is a hooped fruit cage as shown above. These can have a plastic roof panel to protect you from the rain but allowing rain onto your fruit bushes which are protected from the wind and birds. Fruit cages can join onto your tunnel or be used as a stand-alone unit. We can also supply elbow-height raised beds to save you bending. These make maximum use of the tunnel height and allow storage underneath.

Hooped fruit cage, polytunnel and raised beds from JM Polytunnels, Carlow. A vast amount of fruit & vegetables you buy in supermarkets was grown in polytunnels. Why not get your own? Our models are sturdy and compact and, we feel, much better looking than the industirial metal pole versions which look out of place in a domestic garden. Guaranteed results for your kitchen crops are easily achieved with minimal knowledge plus you'll have a lovely place to do your gardening, out of the wind and rain. Tunnels can be staked down or the plastic can be dug in if required. Hanging Baskets and plant supports can be hung from the rails.

Although the Irish climate is a great one for growing a wide variety of crops we are limited to cool climate produce. If you want to grow a broader range of crops and extend your season then a polytunnel is a cost effective solution. This book is a very practical guide to polytunnel gardening and will help you get the best value out of a small space. For both beginners and experienced gardeners alike it provides the knowledge you need to succeed!

A wide range of racks, shelves, potting tables and raised beds can be made to order and to a height that suits you best. These can be either built-in or free-standing so they can be removed after seedlings are ready to sow outdoors and to make way for taller plants during the growing season. Please enquire for options & prices.

Watering your polytunnel plants: Once your tunnel is up and stocked with seedlings and plants, you'll need to keep an eye on watering. No natural rainfall and higher temperatures in your tunnel mean that plants can dry out much more quickly than those outside. You will need to use humous-rich soil to help retain water. Mix in plenty of organic matter to help keep plants healthy. To make life easier, we can set up a water tank with standard hose fitting to take the hard labour out of watering your crops. Please enquire for details and costs as these vary by situation.

Some uses for your polytunnel:

A cloche-style model can be placed over raised beds or prepared ground to boost growth and protect from winds during the crucial early stages of seedling growth.

Walk-in models: The central roof rail allows support for tying-in climbing plants such as vine tomatoes, or for starting off early hanging baskets.

You can also overwinter delicate "southern-hemisphere" plants in a polytunnel, safe from the worst of the weather.

Multiply your perennials by taking cuttings and growing them on in your tunnel for much better results.

Polytunnels are ideal for your tender seedlings and for starting off hanging baskets

Shelving in your polytunnel

Use the staging (shelving) for seedlings and move them out to your coldframe or beds when your plants grow big enough. For taller plants such as tomatoes, simply pinch out the tops when they reach roof height. They'll need string or cane supports as they produce big crops inside. Get a production line going, sowing every 2 weeks so you'll have a series of crops into the Autumn. Strawberries do particularly well in a polytunnel and you can bury the runners in new pots until they take, ensuring a new set of plants every couple of years.

wheelchair users, raised beds, vegetable growing, Ireland

All components are removable and can be made at a suitable working height to save bending or for mobility-impaired gardeners. Wheelchair-friendly polytunnels: We can also supply raised polytunnels, which are suitable for mobility-impaired gardeners. Please ring for more details.

TIP:

Early season growing. Our staff use heated propagators to start seedlings, then they transfer them to the polytunnel for a head-start on the growing season. This is ideal for expensive seeds such as beef tomatoes where you don't want to risk poor germination.
